Domnic D'souza, the mysterious photographer from Shiolim.

Goa Gil told me of Dominic D'souza, a photographer from the village of Shiolim  in Goa. Dominic was a good friend of  Gil and Arianne and also shared my interest in photographing the 'Hippy' culture in North Goa, a good two decades or so before I did.
Personally, I had never heard of  Dominic  before this time, nor do I have any knowledge of his current whereabouts.
Gil showed me two of the prints made by Dominic in the eighties.I would assume that Dominic printed his own photographs. These B&W portraits have their backgrounds masked out during the printing process and  are also hand tinted.

  2. Being a photographer, I loved Domnic. He was a quiet and old time gentle soul. Used a simple point and shoot film camera...maybe Canon. He made his own chemicals by grinding the rocks and creating the chemistry. I was a witness to this as he once shared his workflow with me at his home. He also used an very old enlarger from the 1930's. Very talented man...he photographed many of the winter western residents of Goa. He had a great sense of capturing the essence of sub culture that appeared in Oct Nov and stayed to March or April.
I am very sorry to see he passed away. Somewhere in my storage I have a medium format negative of his wife and him outside their home in Siolim.

  3. Hiya,

I am JP from France and still have 2 beautiful photos hand tinted taken for me by Dominic during the 1975/1976 season in Goa. One where I am in front of my tepee (made of coconut tree leaves)and one with a group of French friends.

The photos are still in excellent quality like they have been taken yesterday lol

If I remember well I think Dominic was using a Yashika camera. Maybe a 635. Anyway for sure it was one of this type.
